   its called tagging the fish, it is a small tag that conatains a serial number used for scientific research into fishes activities. And no it doesnt hurt the fish

   this vision was from a 8kg marlin tournament off the east coast of australia, the marlin hit the outrigger first then came into the boat backwards, lucky for us,thats why we had to tag it and released unharmed, was scary at the time but.
